Springfield Lake Flood Control Dam
The Challenge
Project Challenge
The electrical system upgrade for this active flood control dam involved replacing the electrical switchboards, conduits, power and fiber optic cabling from Reservoir Road to the Gate House, which is located 118 feet above the Black River. As a certified Contractor Quality Control (CQC) contractor, Sanborn Electric was also responsible for performing rigorous documentation throughout the project.
Sanborn Electric, working in conjunction with Colony Construction in 2022, was entrusted to perform a comprehensive series of extensive electrical system upgrades designed to preserve and extend the service life of this vital facility.
The North Springfield dam is one of three USACE flood Control Dams for which Sanborn Electric has performed electrical renovations. The others include Littleville Lake Dam and Knightville Dam in Huntington, Massachusetts.
Our Solution
Sanborn Electric Solution
Our crews installed over 2,000 feet of highly specialized PVC coated rigid steel conduit, entrenched across the earthen dam crest road and along the underside of the Gate House Bridge, working from an Aspen Aerial B-32 Lift designed for access to bridges with weight restrictions.
Work was successfully completed during the summer months, on schedule and without incident.
SPECIAL NOTE: Jay Harris, owner of Colony Construction, passed away in 2026. Jay and his family were dear friends of our Sanborn family for 20+ years. A delightful and talented man, Jay was versed in the arts, loved the outdoors, and spoke five languages. We deeply miss him, and honor his legacy.
